Powell, Herbert B., 1903-1998
Herbert Butler Powell was a United States (U.S.) Army officer. He was commissioned into the Army in 1926. During World War II (WWII), he served in the European Theater of Operations (ETO); was a battalion commander of the 32nd Infantry, 1941-1942; was chief of staff (CofS), 75th Infantry Division, 1943-1945, and was deputy, G-1 First (1st) Army Europe, 1945-1946. After the war, he was an advisor to the Pennsylvania National Guard, 1947 and served with the Second (2nd) Army, 1947-1948. He commanded the 17th Infantry Regiment, 1949-1950, and served as chief of staff in the 7th Infantry Division, Korea, 1951. As a commanding general (CG), he was assigned to: 25th Infantry Division, Army, Pacific, 1954-1956; U.S. Army, Pacific, 1956; various Army schools, 1956-1958; Third (3rd) Army and the Continental Army Command, 1960. He retired from military service in 1963 and was appointed ambassador to New Zealand until 1967. He died in 1998.
