Wyse, Thomas, Sir, 1791-1862

Son of Sir Thomas Wyse of Ireland, William Charles Bonaparte Wyse became one of the guiding spirits of the Provencal literary movement known as Felibrige. After Mistral and Aubanel, he can be rated as one of the half-dozen most important poets among the some two hundred writers engaged in this movement, and as one of the most creative in his use of form and symbolism. He was for many years an intimate of Mistral, Roumanille, Donnadieu, and other felibres of the revival of Provencal poetry in the nineteenth century.
