The Kiersted family papers represent lifetime activites of John Kiersted, Sr., and John Kiersted, Jr.

John Kiersted, Sr., a son of Dr. Christopher Kiersted, was born February 24, 1786 in Saugerties, Ulster Co. N.Y. Kiersted studied surveying with William Cockburn and eventually chose surveying as his life's vocation. Through his activities as a land speculator and his interests in commerical activities such as tanning and lead manufacture, Kiersted became a prominent citizen of Ulster County. In 1814 he was elected to the New York State Legislature as the representative from Sullivan and Ulster Counties.
