Wisconsin. Equal Rights Division

In 1967, the functions of the former Governor's Commission on Human Rights (WIHV85-A2183) and of the Equal Opportunities Division (WIHV86-A2045) of the Industrial Commission (WIHV85-A2180) were assigned to the newly created Equal Rights Division of the Department of Industry, Labor, and Human Relations (WIHV85-A482). Under 1995 Wisconsin Act 27, the division was transferred to the newly created Dept. of Workforce Development (WIHV96-A859) effective July 1, 1996. In Wisconsin State Archives' database entries, the above form of agency name is used for all appropriate records dating 1967-present.

The Equal Rights Division promotes compliance with state laws to protect citizens from discrimination in employment, housing and public accomodations; assures that legal provisions for proper hours, conditions of work, and payment of wages are met; assures that prevailing wages are paid for state or municipal construction projects and state highway construction; and assures that persons and businesses displaced by public projects receive adequate relocation services, and compensation for losses incurred.
