Sorem, Ronald Keith, 1924-

Ronald K. Sorem was born in Northfield, Minnesota, in 1924. He received his Masters degree from the University of Minnesota in 1948 and his Ph. D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1958. He was a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey from 1948 to 1955, working in Cuba, Maine, and the Philippine Islands and then a Professor of Geology at Washington State University from 1959 to 1983. He was also the director of the Marine Mineral Resource Museum from 1988 to 1994. While a professor he received grants from the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the National Science Foundation and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Sorem was a co-investigator for the International Decade of Ocean Exploration Seabed Assessment Program for the National Science Foundation from 1972 to 1975, and he was also a co-investigator and chief scientist at sea on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association's Deep Ocean Environmental Study (Domes) Project from 1975 to 1979. In 1986 he was one of the scientists on the USSR Pacific Ocean Vinagradov Research Expedition. He served as vice-president, 1976- 1986, and president, 1986- 1990, of the Commission on Manganese of the International Association of the Genesis of Ore Deposits and project leader of the International Geological Correlation Project, Project III "Genesis of Manganese Ore Deposits." He was the Washington State University mineralogy consultant for volcanic ash study regarding possible health hazards due to the eruption of Mount Saint Helens in 1980. Sorem has published a book and more than 50 professional articles.
