United South End Settlements.

In 1950 several settlement houses formed the Federation of South End Settlements to utilize and coordinate their resources more effectively. Ten years later the members of the Federation merged into a single corporation, the United South End Settlements (USES). The collection consits of the records of USES and some of its predecessor houses, South End House, Lincoln House, Hale House, Harriet Tubman House, Ellis Memorial, and the Children's Art Centre. The records of South End House (the oldest, largest and most influential of the Boston Settlements) comprise the major portion of the collection. Included are scattered papers of Robert A. Woods, long-time director of South End House, and sections of the uncompleted manuscript of Zone of Emergence, a social survey of Boston edited by Woods and Albert J. Kennedy.
