South Dakota. Governor (1971-1978 : Richard F. Kneip)
Born at Tyler, Minnesota on January 7, 1933. Died March 9, 1987 at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. First governor to serve more than two terms and the fourth democratic governor. Indian-White relations, tax reform, aid to education, highway construction, and water development were major issues during his governorship. Carried out a major reorganization of State government. Resigned July 24, 1978 during his eighth year as governor to serve as ambassador to Singapore. In 1980 he resigned the ambassadorship and returned to South Dakota.
