Carpenter, Walter Samuel, 1888-1976
Walter S. Carpenter, Jr., was born in Wilkes Barre, Pa., on January 8, 1888. He graduated from Wyoming Seminary in 1906 and entered Cornell University. He left in 1910 in the middle of his senior year, when he was hired by the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. to go to Chile in connection with the nitrate business. After several years, he came to Wilmington as the Director of the Development Department. He was elected as director and vice president in 1919 and in 1926 he was named vice chairman of the executive committee. Carpenter was president of the company from 1940-47 and chairman of the board from 1948 to 1962. Carpenter was also a director of the General Motors Corp. from 1929 to 1954 and served on the GM finance committee from 1932 to 1944. Walter Carpenter died in Wilmington, Del., on February 2, 1976.
