Brainerd Mission School (1817-1838)

Brainerd was established in 1817 by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions to train and educate Cherokee Indian children at what is now Chattanooga, TN. It was closed in 1838 after the U.S. Government removed the Cherokee peoples West. Brainerd had a satellite mission at Carmel, Pickens Co., GA, and accounts at post offices in Carmel and "Taloney" (Talona), Gilmer Co., GA.
