Folin, Otto, 1867-1934
Folin (Univ. of Chicago, Ph.D. 1898) established a research laboratory for biochemical research at the McLean Hospital in 1900. In 1907 he was appointed associate professor and head of the Harvard Medical School's newly formed Department of Biological Chemistry. Folin did pioneering studies in urinalysis and blood analysis to set normal values for testing and diagnosis and to illustrate the chemistry of human metabolism. Folin's contributions include the introduction of biochemistry to hospital laboratories as a tool for diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patients.
