United States. Vandalia Land Office

The Vandalia Land District Office, created by an act of Congress (May 11, 1820), assumed responsibility for part of the land north of the third principal meridan baseline which had been formerly attached to the Shawneetown District. All lands north of the line separating townships sixteen and seventeen north of the baseline were transferred in 1831 to the newly created Danville Office. In 1833 Vandalia received twenty-six additional townships which had been part of the Edwardsville District.

On December 9, 1823 a fire destroyed the Illinois State House in Vandalia in which the Receiver for the Vandalia Land District kept his office. All the Receiver's records predating the fire apparently were destroyed as a result. The Vandalia Land District Office was discontinued on May 1, 1856 and responsibility for selling all remaining public land in the district was transferred to the Springfield Land District Office.
