Ravenel, Edmund, 1797-1871.
Dr. Edmund Ravenel, a physician, professor, plantation owner, and naturalist, was born in Charleston, S.C. and received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to practicing medicine, Ravenel taught chemistry at the Medical College of South Carolina and owned plantations. He was president of the Elliott Society of Natural History and wrote numerous scientific articles. Ravenel married Charlotte Matilda Ford, daughter of Timothy Ford (1762-1830) and Sarah Amelia DeSaussure; after his first wife's death he married Louisa Catherine Ford (d. 1886), her half-sister.
