Porter, Howard Nelson.
Howard N. Porter was born in 1902 in Sandy City, Kentucky. At age 15 he went to work in a steel mill in Ashland, Kentucky. Porter helped organize steel workers into the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel, and Tin Workers (AFL) and in 1936 helped lead the successful fight to switch the union's affiliation to the CIO. He continued as a union organizer with the United Steel Workers until his retirement in 1967. Porter died in Columbus, Ohio in 1972.
