Carey, Charles Henry, 1857-1941

Charles Henry Carey was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on October 27, 1857. Carey graduated with a law degree from Cincinnati College in 1883. He first worked as an associate in the Thayer and Williams law firm in Portland, Oregon (1883-1885) before moving briefly to Michigan. In 1889, Carey returned to Portland and began a long career working in many law firms before eventually being elected to serve as judge on the Portland municipal court. He served on many civic boards and committees, including the Portland Art Association, Oregon Historical Society, and Portland Arts and Crafts Society. He wrote a number of articles and books, most notably, "History of Oregon" (1922). Carey was also a member of a number of international organizations, including the League to Enforce Peace and the League of Nations Association. He died in 1941.
