Grist Norman Roy b 1918 doctor
Norman Roy Grist was born on 9 March 1918 , son of Walter Reginald Grist and Florence Goodwin Grist (n̩e Nadin). In 1934 he married Mary Stewart McAlister. He was educated at Shawlands Academy, Glasgow. He went on to study at the University of Glasgow graduating with a BSc in 1939, and a MB ChB in 1942 . For the next four years he completed his war service, taking part in the Normandy landings and proceeding up through Europe until he made contact with the Russians in Eastern Germany. On his return to Scotland he spent two years as a junior clinician in Ruchill Hospital , Glasgow. In 1948 he became a research assistant in the Department of Infectious Diseases of Glasgow University. This post included a year??s postgraduate study working with Professor A W Downie at Liverpool University in the Department of Bacteriology. Three years later he went to work with Professor F O MacCallum in the Virus Reference Laboratory, Collindale, London.
In 1952 he returned to the University of Glasgow to lecture in virus diseases. In 1956 he spent a year in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Michigan working with Professor Thomas Francis. He became a reader in Viral Epidemiology at Glasgow in 1962 and a Professor of Infectious Diseases in 1965 . He held this post until he retired in 1983 . Norman Roy Grist was a member of the Royal College of Physicans, Edinburgh. In 1967 he became a fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists. In 1960 Grist became the Regional Advisor in Viral Epidemiology to Scottish Western Region Hospital Board. He held this post until 1974. In 1967 he became the Consultant in Virus Diseases to WHO. His publications include Diagnostic Methods in Clinical Virology , 3rd edition, (1979) as well as numerous articles in British and international medical journals.
