Santa Clara County (Calif.) Tax Collector.
"The office of tax collector was officially created as an elected office in 1861. Previously, the treasurer served as tax collector in 1850, after which time the sheriff collected state and county taxes. From 1876 to 1893 the treasure served as ex-officio tax collector. With the establishment of the county charter in 1951, the tax collector became an appointed office. In 1967, tax collecting duties were consolidated under the controller/treasurer. Today, tax collecting is a division within the Department of Finance" (Laffey and Detlefs, 1995). Rush McComas served as tax collector during this time period; J.G. Krumb served as deputy tax collector.
