The Stanford Center for Japanese Studies in Tokyo was established in April 1961. The purpose was to provide undergraduate and graduate students from Stanford and other universities with the opportunity to pursue intensive study in Japanese and Asian affairs for a full calendar year. John D. Goheen was its founding director.
