Buckingham, George Villiers, Duke of, 1628-1687

Buckingham was a royalist in the civil war. He was voted a traitor by the House of Commons in 1648, and his estate was sequestered. He escaped from England in 1648, becoming a privy councilor of the exiled Charles II. He fought for the king in defeat at Worcester in 1651 but later became estranged from him. His estates were confiscated in 1651. He returned to England in 1657 and married Mary, daughter of Thomas Fairfax of Cameron, consequently being imprisoned until 1659. After the Restoration, he regained the favor of Charles II.
