Ball, George W.

George W. Ball was a lawyer, under secretary of state, ambassador to the United Nations, author and investment banker. Ball worked for numerous government agencies including the Farm Credit Administration, Treasury Department, Lend-Lease Administration, Air Force Evaluation Board, U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey, and later served as under secretary of state during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. As undersecretary of state, Ball was a vocal critic of the Vietnam War, was part of Kennedy's inner sanctum during the Cuban Missile Crisis, attended NATO meetings, facilitated international economic relations, and played a large role in shaping U.S. foreign policy. Ball left governmental service in 1968 to join the investment banking firm of Lehman Brothers, Kuhn & Loeb. Ball's career also included an interim assignment with Jean Monnet as general counsel for the French Supply Council. At the French Supply Council Ball worked with Monnet to promote France's post-war recovery and later aided Monnet in establishing an European economic plan which laid the foundation for establishing the European Economic Community which eventually led to the formation of the European Union. He also founded the law firm of Cleary, Gottlieb, Friendly & Cox. Ball passed away in 1994.
