Ballinger, Margaret, 1894-1980
Violet Margaret Livingstone Ballinger was born in Glasgow, Scotland on January 11, 1894, and moved to South Africa in 1904. Following an academic career, she concentrated her energy on politics and in 1937 was elected native representative for the Cape Eastern Circle, a seat she held until 1960. Ballinger was a founding member of the Liberal Party of South Africa and leader of the Party from 1953-1955. She died in Cape Town on February 7, 1980.
William George Ballinger was born in Birmingham, England on September 21, 1894, and moved to South Africa in 1928 to act as an adviser on cooperative and trade union organizations for Blacks. In 1948 he was elected senator to represent the natives of the Transvaal and Orange Free State, a seat he held until 1960. Ballinger was regarded as an expert on industrial relations. He died in Cape Town on July 20, 1974.
