Neher, Caspar
Caspar Neher, who became one of the leading stage designers in Europe from the 1920's until his death in 1962 and was in his youth a schoolmate and friend of Bertolt Brecht, began his career by collaborating with the young author, and later collaborated repeatedly with Brecht and Weill--with both together and each separately.
Among the stage designs for which he achieved renown are those for Die Dreigroschenoper, in which he worked together with both of them--and in which the composer's wife, Lotte Lenya, played an important role. He collaborated with Weill (alone) by providing both stage designs and libretto for Die Bürgschaft (Berlin, 1932; revived there in 1957, again with his stage designs). In addition, he provided stage designs for over 700 other productions of operas and plays in Germany, Austria, England, and other countries.
