Archivist, author, educator. Born in 1941 in Austin, Texas. Awarded B.A. and M.A. by the University of Texas at Austin. Awarded Ph. D. by Texas Tech University in 1971. Has been employed by many archival institutions including Texas State Archives (1960; Director, 1977-1986), University of Texas Archives (1961-1963), Texas State Historical Association (1963-1966); Southwest Collection, Texas Tech University (1966-1971); Georgia State Archives (1971-1977). Taught history at Texas Tech University (1966-1971); Georgia State University (1971-1977); Dekalb Community College (1973-1974); University of Texas at Austin (1982- ).
