Siegal, Aranka
Aranka Siegal was born June 10, 1930, in Beregszasz, Czechoslovakia. She grew up under the Nazi regime, and survived Auschwitz with one of her sisters, though the rest of her family was lost. Following the War she came to the United States. Eventually she wrote two autobiographical novels about her experiences under the Nazis, and both have received awards and honors, including a Newbery Honor for her first novel, Upon the Head of the Goat: A Childhood in Hungary in 1982.
