Lloyd, John Edward, Sir, 1861-1947
John Edward Lloyd was born on 5 May 1861 at Liverpool. His family originally hailed from Penybontfawr, Montgomeryshire, and Lloyd remained loyal to these roots throughout his life. He was educated at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and subsequently at Lincoln College, Oxford, graduating in 1885 with a first class degree in history.
In 1885, Lloyd returned to Aberystwyth as a lecturere in Welsh and History. In 1892, he moved to the University of Wales, Bangor, becoming College Registrar, and assistant to Professor Reichel in the history department. In 1899, he followed Reichel to the Chair of History, and it was during this period that he was at his most productive. He wrote regularly on the subject of Welsh history for various journals, and published widely, including his well respected A History of Wales to the Edwardian Conquest, which appeared in 1911.
