Thornton, George, 1819-1901
New South Wales politician. Served on the Legislative Council, 1877-1901. Founding councillor of the N.S.W. Aborigines Protection Association in 1880 and on 1881 Dec. 29, was officially appointed protector of the Aborigines. Founding chairman of Aborigines Protection Board, 1883. Thornton had a interest in the orthography of Aboriginal place names.
