Administrative Assistant to U.S. Representative Leroy Johnson (1953-1954). Tracy City Councilman and Mayor (1958-1960). Assemblyman (1960-1973) representing 12th District. Elected Speaker for one term (1969-1971). Considered one of State's most influential Republicans, he was active in fields of education, water and housing. Assistant Secretary for Congressional and Intergovernmental Affairs, U.S. Department of Transportation (1973-1974). President of California Economic Development Corporation (1984-1991). Chairman of Board of Regents of University of the Pacific (1994- ).
