Thomas, John
John Thomas, of Bluffton, Indiana, was a soldier in Company “A” of the 47th Indiana Volunteer Regiment during the Civil War. Organized in 1862, the regiment, led by Colonel James R. Slack, participated in engagements at Fort Thompson, Riddles’ Point, Fort Pillow, Vicksburg, Champion Hills, the Red River, and Mobile, Alabama. Following the regiment’s return to Indiana, Thomas mustered out of the company on October 23, 1865 as a corporal.
