The athletic program at Harvard was administered by the Director of Hemenway Gymnasium until 1919, then the Department of Physical Education from 1919 to 1946, the Department of Physical Training from 1946 to 1951, the Harvard Athletic Association from 1951 to 1952, and since 1952, the Department of Athletics, under the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, has been responsible for Harvard and Radcliffe athletic activities.
