Fidler, Peter, 1769-1822
Born August 16, 1769 in Bolsover, England, Peter Fidler was a fur trader, surveyor, explorer and cartographer. In April 1788, he joined the Hudson's Bay Company as a labourer and reached York Factory in Manitoba later that year. He was soon promoted from labourer to post journal writer. Throughout his long and remarkable career, Fidler was a serious, dedicated and loyal servant of the HBC. His meticulous post journals, personal notebooks, and journey accounts reflect his zeal for writing and education. He died in 1822.
