Wells family

Beginning with colonial governor Thomas G. Welles, 1590-1659, the Welles family was a prominent force in Glastonbury from its earliest days. Active in the militia, politics and business, family members had an impact on local, state, and national governments. Thomas' great-great-great grandson, Samuel, 1754-1834, was a merchant, shipbuilder and owner, trader and manufacturer. An ardent anti-federalist, he supported the "Republican" cause at the state and local level. He also worked to break the Congregational Church's hold on state government. Samuel's sons were also active in politics. Most notable was Gideon, 1792-1878, who, in addition to serving in the General Assembly and as state comptroller, served as Secretary of the Navy under Presidents Lincoln and Johnson.
