National Farmers Process Tax Recovery Association.

The Farmers Process Tax Recovery Association was organized in Des Moines in March, 1936 for the "specific purpose ... to recover money illegally taxed upon our products by a law declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of the U.S.A." It became a national organization a year later. Mr. Edward Kennedy was NFPTRA's Washington Representative. His main duty was to lobby Congressmen and Senators to get legislation passed for the refund of the Hog Process Tax declared illegal by the Supreme Court. Mr. Andrew J. Johnson was the Secretary of the National Farmers Process Tax Recovery Association. He was also the president of the Iowa Farmers Union and a member of the Iowa Soil Conservation Committee. Mr. Donald Van Vleet was president of the NFPTRA. Mr. D.B. Gurney was the leading figure behind the movement to refund the processing tax. He initiated claims for the farmer. When his son was elected to the U.S. Senate, Gurney decided to discontinue the fight and all claims filed by him were turned over to the NFPTRA. Ms. Helen Holehan was secretary to the Iowa Farmers Union.
