After a career as a poet, journalist and foreign correspondent in Paris and Morocco, he joined the U.S. Foreign Service and served in Japan, Russia, Italy, and consulates in other countries. In addition to publishing books of Russian, Albanian and Hawaiian folklore, he translated and edited a work of Japanese mythology.
