Johnston, Annie Bronn

Born, 1912; died, Reno, Nevada June 27, 1977. Known as "Wild Horse Annie," Annie Bronn Johnston, and Velma Johnston. Devoted herself to the protection of wild horses and burros. Responsible for the passage of legislation outlawing mechanized pursuit of horses. Worked towards the enactment of Wild Horse Annie Law (1959) and Wild, Free Roaming Horse Act (1971). Founded the International Society for Protection of Mustangs and Burros, later known as the Wild Horse Organized Assistance (WHOA!).
