NAFSA: Association of International Educators (Washington, D.C.)

Nonprofit membership association that provides training, information, and other educational services to professionals in the field of international educational exchange. Founded in 1948 as the National Association of Foreign Student Advisers, it became the National Association forForeign Student Affairs in 1964. Present name change took place in 1990. Headed by elected officers, a board of directors, and an executive committee, much of the day-to-day work of the organization has been handled at various times by executive assistants, executive secretaries, an executive director, and an executive vice president. Hugh Jenkins was the first executive director, 1966-1974, and then executive vice president, 1974-1980. He was succeeded by John F. Reichard and Naomi F. Collins. NAFSA provides consultaions, workshops, and in-service training to strengthen services to foreign students and scholars on U.S. campuses and to U.S. students abroad. Also provides information services, project funding opportunities, and liaison/representation with U.S. government agencies. Major funded programs

are: Cooperative Projects Program, which administers a variety of special projects on campuses and communities: Education for International Development Program, which conducts activities to enhance the experiences of Agency for International Development participants; Field Service, dedicated to strengthening campus and community services to foreign students, U.S. colleges and universities, and U.S. students aboad. NAFSA has five professional sections: Admissions Section, ADSEC; Association of Teachers of English as a Second Language ATESL; Council of Adivsers to Foreign Students and Scholars, CAFSS; Community Section, COMSEC; Section on U.S. Students Abroad, SECUSSA. On June 10, 1987, NAFSA officials designated the University of Arkansas Libraries, Special Collections Division, as the official repository for their permanently valuable non-current records.
