Adams, Paul DeWitt, 1906-1987

Paul DeWitt Adams (1906-1987), born in Heflin, Alabama, was commissioned to the infantry from West Point in 1928. He served with the 34th Infantry and 8th Infantry Division. He served also as Executive Officer of 1st Special Service Force, the commanding officer of the 143rd Infantry, and then rose to the rank of Brigadier General in March 1945. After World War II, he served as commanding general of the 101st Airborne Division, V Corps, Third Army, and then commander in chief of Strike Command between 1961 and 1966. His decorations included two Distinguished Service Medals, the Silver Star, two Legion of Merit awards, and four Bronze Star awards. He retired from the military in 1966.
