Andell, Marguerite 1884-1968
Marguerite Andell was born on November 6, 1884 on John's Island. Her parents were William Andell and Mrs. Margarethe Schimmell Andell. Miss Andell was a graduate of Roper Hospital School of Nursing in 1914, and was elected Superintendent of Nurses in 1924, a position in which she proposed ideas that were ahead of her time. She retired in 1948 after working for 24 years at Roper Hospital and the Medical College School of Nursing. She served as president of the South Carolina State Nurses Association, District 1, president of the Roper Hospital Alumnae Association, vice president of the City Federation of Women's Clubs, and president of the State Board of Nurse Examiners. Additionally, she was a member of the board of directors of the S.C. State League of Nursing Education. The first annual published by the Student Government Association, years 1943-1946, was dedicated to her. Miss Andell died in May 1968.
