Florida (Battleship)
The first USS Florida was a sloop, which served between 1824 and 1831, as a survey ship under the command of Lieutenant T.R. Gedney. The second Florida was a side wheel steamer commisioned in 1861 with Lieutenant J.R. Goldsborough as skipper. Repaired and decommissioned three times during the Civil War, she was used as a supply transport until 1867. The third, a screw frigate, commissioned in 1867 with sea trails in 1868 with unconventional marine designs never approved fully by naval brass.
The forth was a monitor class, BM-9 launched in 1901. In 1908 it was changed to USS Tallahassee to free the state name for assignment to battleships. The fifth Florida, battleship BB-30 was commisioned in 1910 with service on the Atlantic and was decommissioned in 1931.
