Worcester County Institution for Savings

Opened June 11, 1828 by a distinguished group of men in Worcester, Mass., as an encouragement to young men and others to save a portion of their wages; first such organization in the country. By 1848 assets exceeded $1,000,000. Originally located in what is now the Central Exchange Building but later located on the corner of Foster and Main Street. Bank bought out by BankBoston in early 1990s.
