Ronan, Charles E.

Born June 1, 1914, in Chicago, IL; died April 8, 2004, Chicago, IL. Professor and author. Charles E. Ronan entered the Society of Jesus in 1932, the year after his graduation from Fox Valley Catholic High School in Aurora, IL, and was ordained as a priest in 1945. He earned his B.A. and M.A. at Loyola University in Chicago,in 1941 and 1953, respectively, and his doctorate in Latin american history at the University of Texas in 1958. From 1957 to 1960 he taught history at Loyola University Chicago, returning to the faculty in 1963 and remaining until his retirement in 1984. Ronan studied the contributions of 18th century Jesuits, authoring books on Francis Clavigero, S.J., and Juan Ignacio Molina. To commemorate the 400th anniversary of the entry of the Jesuits into China he organized the "East Meets West" symposium at Loyola, which resulted in the book East Meets WEst: The Jesuits in China, 1582-1773. Charles E. Ronan, S.J., continued his work researching and publishing until he passed away on April 8, 2004.
