Elsie Forrest was born in Wrexham, Denbighshire in 1904 . Prior to attending university, Elsie was a student at Hutcheson's Grammar School for Girls. Elsie attended the University of Glasgow from 1921-1925 , taking classes in Latin, Greek and French in her first year; Roman History, Greek (Intermediate Honours) and Logic (Ordinary) in her second; Latin (Honours), Greek (Honours) and English (Ordinary) in her third; and Latin (Honours), Greek (Honours) and Classical Philology in her fourth and final year. She was awarded 17 prizes in total, including the Jeffray Gold Medal in Greek in 1922, the Cowan medal for Latin in 1923, the Ramsay Memorial Gold Medal in Latin in 1925 and the Comparative (Classical) Philology prize in 1925. She graduated with a first class honours MA in Classics in November 1925 and returned to the University of Glasgow from 1926-1927 as a postgraduate student. She graduated with a postgraduate diploma in Comparative Philology in 1927 and subsequently became a teacher in Glasgow.
