Torrey, Henry Cutler
Born April 4, 1911 in Yonkers, N.Y., Henry Cutler Torrey began his career at Rutgers University as Professor of Physics from 1946-1964, served as Chairman of the Physics dept. from 1959-1964 and Dean of the Graduate School from 1965 to 1974. He earned his B.S. from the University of Vermont in 1932 and went on to receive both his A.M. and Ph.D. from Columbia in 1933 and 1937, respectively. Torrey was a G.W. Ellis Fellow in 1933-34, a Columbia University Fellow from 1935-36, a John Simon Guggenheim Fellow in 1963-65 and a Rutgers Faculty Fellow at the Faculte des Sciences, University of Paris in 1964-65. He was an instructor in Physics at Pennsylvania State College from 1937-41 and later an assistant professor from 1941-42. Torrey served as a research associate at the Radiation Laboratory, M.I.T. from 1942-46. In 1952-53, he was a consultant for the Purdue Research Foundation and the California Research Corporation and was a member of the Board of Governors of the Lunar Science Institute from 1969-70.
