Glidden, Joseph Farwell, 1813-1906.
Inventor of barbed wire.
Joseph Glidden invented barbed wire in 1873. He was partnered with Isaac Ellwood until 1876, when Glidden left the wire business. Other business ventures included running a hotel, partnership in a Texas ranch with Henry B. Sanborn, and founding the local DeKalb newspaper. Glidden donated the land for Northern Illinois University.
