Wisconsin. Division of Public Assistance
In 1939, the Wisconsin legislature created a new State Department of Public Welfare (see WIHV85-A488). The functions of the former State Pension Department (see WIHV87-A1001) and Public Welfare Department (see WIHV89-A85) were assigned to the Division of Public Assistance. With the reorganization of state agencies in 1967, the Department of Public Welfare was brought into the new Department of Health and Social Services (see WIHV85-A674). The functions of the Division of Public Assistance were distributed among several divisions of the new Department.
The Division carried out all the responsibilities relating to public assistance or non-institutional relief. Social Security aids such as old age assistance, aid to dependent children, aid to the blind, and aid to the disabled were administered by the counties under the supervision of the Division; governed by a formal agreement with the federal government.
