University of Minnesota. Dept. of Speech, Communication and Theatre Arts
Established as the department of speech in 1926, the name was changed to the department of speech and theatre arts in 1951 and the department of speech, communication and theatre arts in 1966. The department oversaw a wide variety of disciplines, including public speaking, speech pathology, theatre production, rhetoric, group communications and theatre history. In 1969, the division of speech science, pathology and audiology was established, allowing the department of speech, communications and theatre arts to narrow its focus. This focus was further narrowed in 1971, when the department split into two, creating the department of speech and the department of theatre arts.
