University of Minnesota. College of Liberal Arts

The forerunner of the College of Liberal Arts (CLA) at the University of Minnesota was the College of Science, Literature and the Arts (SLA), which was established in 1869. In 1962, in an effort to strengthen the liberal arts education and to better integrate the science and technology courses, SLA was reorganized. Departments in the physical sciences, including astronomy and geology were aligned with the Institute of Technology and SLA was renamed the College of Liberal Arts. The College of Liberal Arts is the largest college at the University of Minnesota, enrolling approximately 14,000-16,000 students annually.
