Martin, William J. (William Joseph), 1868-1943
William Joseph Martin Jr., was born in Columbia, Tenn. in 1868, but during his youth his father accepted a position with Davidson College and they moved to Davidson. He was graduated from Davidson College in 1888 and earned an M.A. the following year. In 1890, he earned his M.D. degree from the University of Virginia and four years later he earned his Ph. D. In 1896, he returned to Davidson as Chambers Professor of Chemistry, a position which he held until 1912, when he became president of the college. In 1929, he retired from the presidency and became President of the Assembly Training School in Richmond, Va.
