J. Howard Pew (1882-1971) was the second son of J. N. Pew, Sr. (the founder of the Sun Oil Company). He was born in Bradford, Pa. and attended Grove City College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After graduating from M.I.T. in 1901 he went to work for Sun as a supervisor at the Marcus Hook refinery. He was instrumental in the development of the Sun Red line of lubricating oils. In 1906 he was named vice president of the company and six years later he succeeded his father as president. He held this position until his retirement in 1947.

J. Howard Pew was a founder of the American Petroleum Institute. He was an important member of the conservative coalition which opposed Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. As such he was a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Manufacturers and played an important role in the Republican Party during the 1940s and 1950s.
