United States. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The Associated Records of the Monitor Collection have been assembled from several sources by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Monitor National Marine Sanctuary. Title III of the Marine Protection, Research and Sanctuary Act of 1972, as amended at 16 USC 1431 et seq., as amended, now also known as the National Marine Sanctuaries Act (NMSA), authorizes the Secretary of Commerce to designate National Marine Sanctuaries. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Monitor National Marine Sanctuary was so designated by the Secretary of Commerce on January 30, 1975. The Sanctuary was originally administered under the Office of Coastal Zone Management, which combined with the Office of Ocean Management in 1979 to create the Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management. In 1982, that office came under the umbrella of the National Ocean Service. The Sanctuary's functions and activities are governed by 15 CFR Section 922. It is the responsibility of the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary to protect and preserve the history of US Steamer Monitor, and to assure that the remains of Monitor are preserved for future generations. The Sanctuary's offices are on the campus of The Mariners' Museum in Newport News, Virginia.
