Middleton, Joseph.
Joseph Middleton ( - ), shipper, and later, farmer from Annapolis, Md., began his career with his brothers William ( - ) and Gilbert ( - ) as a mariner and ship's carpenter. When the Revolutionary War broke out, the three brothers enlisted and served on various barges during part of the war. Later, Gilbert took over his father's inn and hired out boats, while Joseph and William began shipping goods on their own boats in the Chesapeake Bay region. In the late 1780s, Joseph gave up his shipping business and turned to farming.
