Physicist. Received a Ph. D. in physics from Yale University. Took part in the Manhattan Project during World War II; later director of the Oak Ridge Institue of Nuclear Studies. Vice-President and Director of Graduate Studies, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, 1950-1963.
